San Franola Granola

San Franola Granola, I am not sure how it happened but I am glad that I stumbled across this stuff.

As I have mentioned multiple times this year I am attempting to make an effort to get in shape and to eat better. For me personally eating better means eating less junk; soda, fast food, and all of that stuff that normally falls under the category of things you want to eliminate when you want to “eat better.” For me eating better means more fruits and veggies but most importantly adding more protein to my diet. You wouldn’t expect granola to have much protein but this product boasts 10 grams of protein per serving…. ah-mazing!

So like I said I am not sure how it happened, maybe from Instagram, but I found San Franola granola. I checked their website out and it seemed like this was something that I wanted to try. The company sets themselves apart from other granola makers, their granola has less sugar, higher fiber, and more protein. They also use a proprietary roasting technique which they say helps to bring out the flavor of their natural ingredient. Annnnd if that isn’t great enough their recipes are wheat-free and when you read the nutritional label of the granola you will be able to read every ingredient that is in it (that may not seem very exciting to most but I mean really look at the stuff you regularly fuel your body with, I am sure there are a few things in them that you have no idea what they are and you probably cannot pronounce the names of). After playing around on their website and reading some reviews about the company I decided that I really needed to get my hands on some of this granola. San Franola Granola is carried in select grocery stores but none of them were in my area so I opted to shop online. The company has 5 flavors; California Raisin, Lemon Zest, Ginger Snap, Toasted Chia, and Cinnamon Almond. Seriously everything sounded delicious and I was really hoping that they offered some sort of sampler pack of all the flavors. So I looked at their online shop; six 12-ounce bags or 4 12-packs of single serve boxes… wait a second 6 bags or a ton of single serves of the same flavor? That cannot be right, so I emailed the company; let me note I believe it was a Sunday morning or a Saturday either way it was an early weekend morning and they got back to me almost immediately. I asked if they had a sampler pack, they did not but said they would keep an eye for my order and throw in some samples of other flavors for me, score!

So back to the drawing board; which flavor? Everything sounded so delicious but I ultimately went with the Cinnamon Almond, their original flavor. The way I see it is that if a company has an original flavor always go with that one. The other ones did sound so good especially the Lemon Zest but original flavors in my opinion tend to be tried and true. I placed my order for the 6 bags and anxiously awaited for them to arrive.

Probably about a week or less later the granola arrived; I couldn’t wait to try it. (I just wanted to note that I did not receive any other flavors to try and honestly I can’t hold that against these guys they have a business to run and I don’t expect them to remember me) The packaging of the granola is so fun and simple and very San Francisco, Golden Gate Bridge, a little downtown scenery on the back of the bag. I love San Francisco and I think that even though this is just a package for granola it is a good representation of the city.

When you first look at the granola through the little peephole on the bag, it doesn’t look like what we are accustom to granola looking like.  I am not even sure how to describe it, so take a look for yourself.



Before I even gave the granola a fair test I already started to size it up, thinking it looked super cinnamon-y and was probably very bitter and not delicious like a lot of “healthy” foods can be. Sooner or later I had to open the bag so I opened it one day when I was in a rush to get to work, measured out 1/2 of a cup in a little baggie and hit the road. I remember having an open water bottle next to me on my drive just incase the granola needed to be washed down super quick, but to my surprise it didn’t need to be, it was DELICIOUS; just the right amount of cinnamon, almonds galore, and even better the whey protein that they use in the product didn’t leave a funky aftertaste in my mouth.



I fell in love with this granola at the first protein-packed bite. Because I can get super excited about new things that I love I like to tell everyone about them and make everyone try it. I made one of my coworkers try it and she liked it, so I gave her a bag. And get this, Marlboro Man was rummaging through my lunch bag and found a ziplock full and decided to try it and even he liked it, so I gave him a bag as well. Marlboro Man is a meat and potatoes kind of guy so it is kind of amazing that he liked the granola and he wasn’t even turned off about how much better it is for you than other granolas.

Often people give me a hard time for spending what they think is too much money on certain things, but heres the deal, you get what you pay for. I firmly believe that. If something is cheap, it will reflect in the product or service. If something is a little more expensive chances are there is a reason for that. I am not saying San Franola Granola is going to break the bank because I don’t feel like 6 12-oz bags for $42 is too expensive (for all of us non-math people that’s only 7 bucks a bag) but it might be more expensive than some of your more sugar laden  granolas. (I haven’t compared prices but I feel very sure about that statement)

I am on bag 3 of my granola order and I cannot wait to order again, I think this time I am going to try the Lemon Zest flavor. If you love granola but want something with less sugar and guilt I highly suggest trying these guys out. If you are local to a Whole Foods or Safeway you should check and see if they stock San Franola Granola. I promise that your mouth will thank you.

I was just checking their website as I was writing this and there is a little note saying that they are sold out for the time being, that should be a sign.

Working on my Fitness

So somewhere between October of last year and March, maybe April of this year I went from being a couch potato to this crazy person who got up at 4:30am to go workout, then back to couch potato… well maybe not actually a couch potato but something similar… lazy, lump always on her laptop probably sums it up better.

Last year I put on a significant amount of weight I would tell you the number if I knew it but I don’t, so I won’t.

I just know dresses and skirts started to be my everyday attire because the thought of trying to squeeze into my jeans was much too much to even think about let alone do. So sometime maybe the middle of last year my good friend Groupon had a deal for a local bootcamp, I had been really wanting to get back into a workout routine and figured group exercise might be it for me so I bought it. I bought the Groupon for this bootcamp and decided that I would start the next camp session after I came home from Italy; so October.

I loved slash hated it I loved working out and getting my body moving but getting up t 4:30 am sucked and going to bed early sucked even more. I did bootcamp for awhile, then things with my migraines started getting worse and then I hurt my achilles tendon, as if all the physical things weren’t enough I started to get really frustrated with the bootcamp and the ethics and dynamics of it (I won’t even go there). So I stopped going to bootcamp and started going to the gym. Then I stopped going to the gym regularly even, then I just stopped. I got back into my ways of non-movement and bad eating and I gained about 14 pounds.

I am writing this because awhile back I read a blog post (which for reference sake I cannot find right now) about a girl who blogged her weight loss journey and it helped to keep her accountable. I am hoping that writing this will help to keep me in check. I promise to not be that annoying person who only talks about losing weight and eating salads. I don’t feel like what I am doing is any sort of journey,  but maybe somewhere along the line I will help to inspire or someone will help me to be inspired.

I am not yet prepared (mostly mentally) to put a number out there for the world to read and for the internet to keep forever but I can promise you that losing and gaining weight is something that I have struggled with for a good portion of my adult life. I yo-yo like no other; up, down, up down.. it is a vicious cycle. Right now I am up. And right now is the time I feel like I need to do something about it. June is halfway through the year, I tried and failed the first half of the year, why not come back and follow through with the things that I started.

Everyone falls off the wagon, but what you do after that is what matters; will you get back on or stay off?

I am choosing to get back on. I started working out again last week; I also have a workout buddy which makes working out early much easier. I find that working out in a group or with someone else makes the workouts easier to do and it helps to push me when I don’t want to keep going. I invested some money into workout books that help to make muscles and strength make more sense. The one that I just finished reading, is “A Woman’s Guide to Muscle and Strength” by Irene Lewis-McCormick. This book is amazing, she breaks down how strength training works for a female’s body, myths on using weights, using proper form, and there are even several different workout programs that you can follow. Since I have been out of my gym routine for a while I am using the beginner workouts. I followed the program 5 days last week; strength and cardio; it was pretty much amazing, I still feel that great sore feeling after you’ve worked your body. One thing I wish that this book did discuss is nutrition, if it is one place that I fall short it is in nourishing my body.

I can gladly eat the same meals a hundred times over as long as no one around me has anything that might be remotely tempting. I am a huge sucker for crunchy things; chips mostly. I never was a soda drinker until Marlboro Man, which is weird because he always drinks diet and I like the real thing; Coke not Pepsi and NEVER diet. I love ice cream, I am not proud to admit this but I can eat a pint of Ben & Jerry’s in a single sitting, ice cream is my happy place. I need to find a book that discusses nutrition on a level that I can comprehend and that will teach me the proper way to eat. If you know of a book that does this please let me know, I will be forever grateful.

So I guess that is it for now, I am not sure that I really said much of anything; maybe this was a post for myself? Like I said to keep me accountable for me; at some point I will put that number down which will make me even more accountable.. soon.
